Odessa=New Gun Laws for Texas?
Some really didn't agree with me on this, but now our own uber-Conservative Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick tells WFAA-TV Ch 8 that it's time to pass a new law for background checks for private gun sales, just as I said last night on the show.
This is the only proposal I can think of that actually could have stopped the shooter in Odessa.
Our Federal laws WORKED with this guy. He failed the Federal Background Check 5 years ago, because of mental illness. FINALLY. IF he would have been banned from buying privately, he wouldn't have had the weapon he used to kill so many in Odessa.
Unfortunately, the guy who sold him the gun, may not be charged with anything. IF he is charged, it will be with a misdemeanor, less than 1 yr in jail. Hardly a disincentive.
That's why I agree with Patrick. A felony would be called for..IF..this murderous loon was illegally sold a gun. Quite possible he wasn't. We need to change that.
YES, I'm with you: No databases on this, etc. Make it affordable: $50 to run it, we would use a DL or State ID.
Lastly, as I said last night: :WHO WOULD SELL THEIR GUN TO A STRANGER, ANYWAYS??? NEVER ME! I'd rather take a smaller cut..much smaller, if necessary..in order to sell it to a gun shop that I KNOW will be responsible for it's next owner-legally-and will have MUCH to lose if they mess it up. My conscious would be clean.
